Prairie du Sac

Old Wine Cave at the Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac.

Eateries

Culver’s

Our first stop in Culver’s, a Wisconsin original, was a pleasant surprise. It was fast food but with a more extensive menu and a more welcoming dining room. Though there was a small wait for our meal it was fresh and tasty so we didn’t mind one bit. We enjoyed our meal but resisted the urge to try one of the flavored custards that looked so good—though that may have been our loss. It sounds like Culver’s might have plans to “Culverize” the west and that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Drinkeries

Wollersheim Winery

We arrived at this historic property late in the afternoon, just in time to take one of the last tours of the day. The tour, which lasted about an hour, consisted of a brief video, a short stroll to see the old wine cave and some of the vines, a jaunt through the wine cellar and ended with a wine tasting. During our tour we learned that the winery had been established in the 1840s by Count Agoston Haraszthy. After giving up on grape growing in Wisconsin he traveled west to California where he became the father of that state’s renowned wine business. The winery, which recently expanded, has a beautiful location on a hillside within sight of the Wisconsin River. Though most of their wines did not appeal to our tastes we did end up purchasing two bottles plus a few other wine related goodies from their extensive shop. Overall, it was an relaxing way to spend the last hours of a busy day. Caution: The winery can get crowded, try visiting early or late in the day to avoid the crush (pun intended).
