Beamers Hells Canyon Tours

Interested in seeing the deepest river gorge in North America we signed up for a full day jet boat tour of Hells Canyon. We gathered with the rest of our sleepy-eyed adventurers early in the morning at the dock in Clarkston. Our jet boat was powerful, fast and had a shallow draft, perfect for venturing up the Snake River and crossing rapids. The engine was a bit loud but not deafening. We quickly left most of civilization behind, the last town was far away by the time we stopped for our buffet breakfast. Soon we were back in the boat; splashing through rapids, slowing down for wildlife sightings and listening to historical and geological information about the area. Our next stop was Heller Bar and we were glad for the stop as it allowed us a chance to stretch our legs and empty our bladders. Our last on the ground stop was at Kirkwood Ranch, a historic once working ranch that has been preserved. As we chowed on our provided lunches we chatted with people who were rafting the river and a small group that was hiking the canyon. Either of those options would have allowed for a more intimate experience but our 200 mile round trip jet boat tour was a good introduction to the area. Hint: AAA members get a 10% discount on tours. Dress in layers since it can be chilly in the morning, hot during the day, and cool again by the time you return.

Caution: The depth of the gorge is measured from the top of nearby mountains, so geologically it is the deepest gorge but visually it fails to impress, do not expect narrow canyons towering above you like at the Grand Canyon. Fee expensive (there are shorter, less expensive tours available).

Hillview RV Park

This small RV park is centrally located in the small, hard-working town of Clarkston. The park is near the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers, the jet boat dock, and the Lewis and Clark Trail. The park is a bit older with quite a few permanent residents but overall the park was tidy. The sites were a good size and the park has free WiFi, a clean bathhouse with pay showers, and laundry. We especially liked the location and the moderate price.
