George Washington’s Mount Vernon
George Washington’s home is a gorgeous, historic hilltop estate overlooking the Potomac River; it is a must see. Mount Vernon is roughly 16 miles south of Washington D.C. and very doable as a day-trip plus many of the tour companies stop there. It gets incredibly busy and long lines form in front of the Mansion every day, try to get there early in the morning to beat the crowds. Start at the Ford Orientation Center and watch the movie about George Washington, you’ll appreciate him all the more afterwards. There is so much more to the property than the Visitor Center and Mansion but it is spread out so be prepared to do a lot of walking.
