Arlington National Cemetery

A visit to Arlington is a sobering experience as white grave markers stretch into the distance. The Cemetery has a Visitor’s Center with maps and information. There is much to see at the cemetery and it is huge so prepare for a lot of walking. The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns takes place every hour or so and shouldn’t be missed. Keep in mind that though the Cemetery is a tourist attraction it is the final resting place of the men and women that served this country and it should be treated with respect.

The United States Marine Corps War Memorial (the Iwo Jima Memorial)

This dramatic memorial is located near Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from DC. Dedicated in 1954 the sculpture is a larger than life depiction of the planting of the American flag on Mt. Suribachi in 1945. After circling the Memorial be sure to take in the view of DC, the monuments on the National Mall and the Capitol Building are all visible. Its a great spot for pictures and relaxing.
