Burlington

Drinkeries

Magic Hat Brewing Company

Located south of town on a side street near the tracks the brewery is eclectic and irreverent yet it is actually a place of worship. They make outrageous beers with exotic flavors but in spite of all that the beer is divine. Take the free tour and browse the extensive gift shop or just head straight for the flowing taps for a free taste. The staff is friendly and casually devoted to their work. Hint: Ask about Vermont’s brewery punch card, if you visit all of them and send in your card you get free schwag. How cool is that?

Adventures

Ethan Allen Homestead

Though the historic site is just north of Burlington off Rte 127 it is tricky to find. Preserved at the park is Ethan Allen’s homestead where he lived the last few years of his life with his wife, Fanny. Start at the Visitor Center and be sure to watch the informative and well-done “Tavern Show” first. There are also exhibits about the larger-than-life Allen; his childhood, his heroics during the Revolutionary War and his passion for Vermont. The Homestead overlooks a bend in the Winooski River and the park is favorite launching spot for fans of paddle sports. Caution: Call ahead for hours, tour times and good directions before visiting.
