Salt Lake City Family History Library
I spent most of a day here at the world’s largest genealogical collection gathering information about my ancestors. The place is huge and at first it seemed quite overwhelming with five floors full of information. Thankfully, there is an introductory movie that explains the basics and tons of volunteers to help you get started. After watching the video I was introduced to a volunteer who explained the computer and printer setup. All of the billions of pages of archival materials are free to look at but there is a small fee if you want to print any of them. The printers take a re-loadable copy card so you don’t need a ton of coins. You can add money to your card but only put on a dollar or two at a time as there are no refunds. Every floor has computers available for research and they provide free access to many resources that you would have to pay for if you were doing the work at home. Other floors have microfiche and microfilm readers.
Hint: Take a CD or Jumpdrive and save everything instead of printing. The Library often offers free research classes. Parking is limited near Temple Square there is some on-street metered parking and a nearby fee parking lot. I found free on-street parking two blocks north of the Library. Caution: Closed on Sundays.
