Eateries

Los Hermanos Restaurant

Located on the main plaza this family-owned restaurant has been around a long time and that probably explains its popularity. We liked the location in a historic building and enjoyed the random small dining areas that were brightly decorated but the food was your basic Americanized-Mexican fare with a few unique combinations. The huge list of smoothies and juice drinks was a plus. Overall, our experience was on the pleasant side – our dishes were tasty, decent-sized, and reasonably priced plus service was quick and efficient. Nothing we can rave about though. Hint: If you wear one of their t-shirts you get a free smoothie drink with the purchase of an entree – a good deal if you live in the area. On-street parking or there is a nearby garage. Caution: Crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, expect a wait. Closed on Sunday.

Adventures

Utah Lake State Park

This state park provides access to Utah Lake, the state’s largest freshwater lake. During our afternoon visit the primary activities seemed to be boating and fishing. Fishermen seem to love it there since the lake has channel catfish, both white and black bass, walleye, bluegill, and carp. The lake is quite shallow, only 14’ deep, and we were told that in the winter the lake freezes and then you can ice skate or ice fish. There were a couple picnic areas, four boat launches, a marina, a new visitor center and museum, and two small camping loops with water, electric, restrooms and showers. There is good bird watching near the south end of the lake around Goshen Bay and we had good luck with shore birds near Provo Bay (neither of which can be accessed from the park). Overall, we were not that impressed with the park; there seemed to be a general lack of upkeep with weeds and trash along the roads. After seeing the campground we were glad we had decided against camping there. Caution: We felt the walk-in fee was reasonable but the drive-in fee seemed quite high.

Bicentennial Park

We stopped off at this small park on the southeast side of town to play the disc golf course. When we first arrived the course was fairly busy but soon it was just us and our discs. The course is older and has been vandalized so it can be hard to find next pin. There are a few mandos and some hills but overall it is a course even beginners can enjoy. The rest of the park offers picnic areas, a playground, two ramadas, barbecue grills, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, restrooms, and a small wetlands area with an interpretive trail. Fun little park that offers lots of ways to get outside and play!

Roosts

Lakeside RV & Campground

Just a few miles west of I-15 this RV park is a bit older but in great shape. The sites are long and level pull-thrus each with a grassy area and picnic table. The main building houses a small store with a wide variety of groceries, fishing tackle, and RV supplies, the super clean bathhouse, and laundry facilities. Out back is the swimming pool (closed in winter). The park also has a playground, horseshoes, basketball, volleyball, and a game room. The park’s free WiFi worked well for us. The slow moving Provo River runs along the back of the property which offers fishing opportunities. There are some permanent units in the middle of the park but they all seemed to be well cared for. There are lots of mature trees which provide great shade but prevented us from using our satellite dish. The entrances to Utah Lake State Park and the Provo River Bike Path are just down the road. The Provo airport is across the street but it is only a small plane airport and didn’t have a lot of traffic while we were there. Caution: We heard that mosquitoes can be a problem in the height of summer.
