Leeds

Leeds (originally called Bennington) remains an agricultural oasis in the Mojave Desert.

Adventures

Quail Creek State Park & Reservoir

Since the Quail Creek Dam was completed in 1985 the resulting lake has been stocked with rainbow trout, bullhead catfish, crappie, Largemouth bass, and even bluegills—making the place a fisherman’s heaven. The lake is also large enough for jet-skiing, water-skiing, and boating. There is a designated swimming area which is quite popular in the warmer months. There are over 20 campsites—half for tents and half for RVs. The sites do not have hook-ups though drinking water is available. The park also offers picnic facilities, restrooms (no showers), pavilions for group use, and a boat launch. The lake is a great place to get familiar with the area’s incredible geology as the rock layers are nicely exposed. Fees are charged for the boat launch, day use, and camping. Hint: You can drive through the park and stop at look-outs free of charge.

Red Cliffs Desert Reserve & Recreation Area

The recreation area is a small portion of the 62,000-acre Red Cliff Reserve that was set aside in 1996. There are hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails to explore as well as arches, canyons, creeks, historic farmhouses, ancient ruins, and dinosaur footprints. The rustic campground, which straddles the often flowing Quail Creek, has ten sites with drinking water, pit toilets, and picnic tables with shelters. Even with all these features probably the best part of the area was the scenery as the park’s namesake red rock dominated the skyline.

Address: Exit I-15 at Leeds, at the southern end of town veer left to stay on the frontage road. After roughly two miles turn right at Harrisburg (which is now a large RV resort).
The road heads west under I-15. Use caution, as these are one-lane underpasses which are 11’ x 11’. Follow the road one mile to the campground.

Leeds CCC Camp Historic District

A few stone buildings and some hillside terracing are all that remains of what was once a rather large CCC camp in the 1930s. We explored the small site one afternoon and were thankful that the Leeds Historical Society is attempting to preserve it. There were a couple interpretive signs and a small pamphlet that told part of the camp’s story. It is one of the best preserved CCC camps in the country, hopefully the state will follow through on plans to further protect and interpret the site. Free.

Leeds RV Park

This gem of a park was worth driving a tiny bit off the beaten track for. All the sites are FHU pull-thrus, they have both 30 & 50 amp service, free WiFi, free cable tv, and nice shade trees. The park also has a clubhouse, horseshoes, clean laundry rooms and bathhouse—all that and at a reasonable price too! There is a small tent area, a few motel rooms, and some long-term residents but everything was kept very tidy. Management was very friendly and helpful.

The small town of Leeds is well situated with many nearby attractions including Zion National Park (which is less than an hour away). Leeds has a post office, a diner, and a small grocery store and all other amenities are available in St. George which is just 15 miles south. Easy access to I-15. Hint: Offers Good Sam discounts.

Caution: They only take cash or check only, no credit cards.

Zion West RV Park

This small RV park had all the basic amenities such as laundry, bathhouse, and rec room but it certainly did not feel like it was worth the price. Our pull-thru site was really close to our neighbors, there was no picnic table, no cable TV, and the advertised wifi was not working during our stay. We only stayed there because we extended our time in the area and the nicer and cheaper park we were staying was full that week. Note: This park was up for sale at the time and could, obviously, change with new management.
