Nicha’s Mexican Food Restaurant
After a long morning of exploring Spanish missions we were starving. Luckily we noticed a restaurant nearby that had a parking lot full of cars which meant to us that the place was good. After a few minute wait we were staring at a menu full of wonderful options. During a conversation with the couple at the next table we learned that our short wait was unusual and that they had been eating at Nicha’s every week for the past ten years. That’s high praise and if we lived in San Antonio we’d be regulars at Nicha’s too. Oh, they make their own tortillas fresh all day long, what a heavenly smell!

The Alamo
Smack in the center of town the 4 acre Alamo complex is a must see. The Alamo has rooms full of exhibits to help tell its story and even better, admission is free. Be prepared to wait in a long line though. The site is owned by the state of Texas but it is run by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas who often host reenactments and other events, check the website for more information.

San Antonio Missions National Historic Park
Included in the park are four active churches which were at the heart of Spain’s plan to tame the wilderness and its people. Missions San José, Concepción, San Juan, and Espada are located within eleven miles of downtown San Antonio and two (Missions San José and Concepción) are accessible by city bus. We toured Mission San José since the Visitor Center is located there. We allotted four hours but we almost didn’t have enough time to see everything. Be sure to check the tour schedule as they are very insightful. Also, wander around back of the church and check out the water-powered grist mill.

Spanish Governor’s Palace
Thankfully this building was never bulldozed to make way for yet another highrise. The name is misleading, it was never a palace more of a municipal building where the Spanish Governor lived with his family and conducted business. Plan at least an hour to explore the house and the beautiful plaza in back. Spring is amazing as all the flowers are blooming, especially the deliciously fragrant Tea Olive. The staff won’t volunteer much information but feel free to ask them lots of questions, they will eventually loosen up. The exhibits and information could use some updating but overall it is wonderful. It is much less crowded than the other area attractions which can be a relief.

Dixie Kampground
This RV park has seen better days but it has plenty of potential. We liked the price and the convenient location not far from downtown. It is about half a mile further east of a pricey KOA. If the place was spruced up a bit it would certainly rank high in our book. Overall it was adequate and we would consider staying there again.
