Rockport Birding and Kayak Adventures
The most reliable way to see the endangered cranes. Our tour guide Capt. Tommy, was very informative and we had plenty of time to watch and photograph the birds. We were closer to the birds than we thought we would be. It was well worth braving the early morning cold. Though the address says Rockport please note that the tour boat actually leaves from Fulton Harbor.

Texas Maritime Museum
Though small this museum tells its part of the LaBelle story amazingly well. The ship was one of the French explorer’s LaSalle’s that sunk in 1684. About a decade ago the ship was located and excavated and it has quite a story to tell. Look for a discount coupon on admission in the local tourist paper. In 2008 the museum was honored as the best Maritime Museum in Texas.

Goose Island State Park
This state park has two camping sections, one right on the oyster shells in the Gulf and one inland tucked among the live oak trees. We camped inland among the oaks for two reasons, one it was cheaper and two we were somewhat protected from the strong winds by all the trees. Our site was surrounded by a thick hedge and was wonderfully private. The park has a long fishing pier and big boat launch and fish (and bird) cleaning station. Not connected to the park but part of the park and well worth the bike ride was the aptly named Big Tree. This live oak is as large as a small house and is over a thousand years old. While most of the action is around the water the park also has hiking and nature trails that wind through the trees laden with epiphytes.

Ancient Oaks RV Park
Nice RV park a few blocks from the main drag in quiet, quaint, artsy Rockport. The park has a very active social calendar and a small pond which attracts a variety of water birds.

Lori’s Booknook
This small store has a great selection of new and used books. No surprise since it is on the coast but the store has a wonderful nautical section. The staff was friendly and helpful. I picked up a whole stack of reading material for under $20! Look for a coupon in the local tourist information paper available around town.
