Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

This refuge is accessed by a horrible road full of car-swallowing potholes but it is worth the bone jarring trip. The refuge’s 45,000 acres protect a variety of habitats and offer opportunities to see the only ocelots in the U.S. as well as alligators and hundreds of species of birds. We did not see any ocelots or gators but we did see numerous javelina, a bobcat, and several new-to-us bird species. The refuge is even more important when you notice the degradation of the land around it, the area is one of the poorest in the U.S. and it shows.
