Eateries

Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ

Don’t let the name or the gas pumps outside fool you, this place is serious about BBQ. It is an order at the counter kind of place but trust me, you’ll enjoy watching your brisket (or turkey, or ribs) being carved and sliced on the spot. Grab a spot at one of the long picnic tables and let the fun begin. Their “sause” [sic] comes on the side and it is spicy but they make a Sissy Sause for tenderfoots.

Adventures

Gruene Hall

The barn-like building may not look like much from the outside but as the oldest dance hall in Texas this building has seen (and continues to see) its share of greats. Its not fancy but Gruene Hall takes live music seriously and shows often sell out in advance. They serve beer and wine and if you get there early you can while away the time playing horseshoes in the beer garden or pool inside. Once the music starts though you’ll be too busy tapping your toes on the old, creaky wooden floor to care about anything else. Western clothing, boots and hat may be optional but they are the norm.
