Monahans Sandhills State Park

Though the entrance and Visitor Center are close to I-20 the campground is tucked a mile or so back in the dunes so road noise is minimal. The dunes are gorgeous, the taller ones, up to 70’, can be “surfed”. The Visitor Center rents sand boards and also has several nice exhibits on the area. There is a short nature trail by the Visitor Center, are several picnic areas and a small camping loop. Most of the campsites have a shade structure, a grill, electric and water, no sewer hook-ups but there is a dump station. Though the miles of sand seem desolate, the area supports a large variety of wildlife, from birds to javelina, coyote, porcupine, and rabbits. There is a special equestrian area and a historic dining hall that can be rented for group use. Bathhouse was clean and showers worked well.

Caution: Expect sand to get everywhere and in everything but its still worth a visit. Avoid the summer months as it can get extremely hot out there.
