Eateries
The Arcade Restaurant
This is Memphis’ oldest cafe for good reason, the food and prices are great and the service is friendly. Though the neighborhood has seen better days the cafe is worth leaving the bustle of Beale Street for. Try the sweet potato pancakes—they’re delicious!

National Civil Rights Museum
Opened in 1991 the museum is located in the Lorraine Motel where Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The museum chronicles the struggle for equal rights by all minorities from the early 1600s to the present. The two rooms where King and his companions were staying have been preserved, they look as though King just stepped out on the balcony. An extremely well put together museum and an extraodinary experience. The museum offers free admission most Mondays after 3pm.

Chucalissa Archaeological Museum
This small, slightly outdated museum preserves and interprets a village site that was inhabited by native people over 1000 years ago. The site was uncovered during work on the adjacent park in 1938. The grounds are well maintained, take the nature trail if you have time. The museum is located on the Chickasaw Bluffs but the view over the Mississippi River is mostly blocked by trees. The museum partners with local Choctaw Indians who are believed to be descendant from the original inhabitants. A good diversion from the rest of Memphis, bring a picnic and enjoy an afternoon under the tall trees.

T.O. Fuller State Park
This park opened in the 1940s as the first park east of the Mississippi open to African Americans. The park offers a small campground, showers, laundry, trails, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, pool, and 18 hole golf course. The park itself is nice but it is located in a rundown neighborhood south of town. We liked the convenient location. The Chucalissa Archaeological Museum is next to the campground. Campers get a free pass to the museum.
