Eateries

Big River Grille

Located downtown within walking distance of most of the major attractions this is a convenient place to grab a beer and relax after a long day of touristing. Keep in mind that with the slightly higher prices and upscale decor this is not your typical local watering hole. Owned by the Gordon Biersch Brewery company the beer was tasty and the menu looked appealing, though we didn’t sample the food.

Krystal

Krystal originated in Chattanooga in 1932 and is now part of a chain stretching across several states. The place was clean, the price was reasonable and the food came out fast and hot. What else do you need from fast food? The square burgers reminded me of the White Castle Burgers I had as a kid in Ohio but without the onions. They also offer free WiFi.

Adventures

Incline Railway

The Incline Railway must have impressed the crowds when it first opened and it does climb quite a steep grade but it might fail to wow today’s modern crowds. We opted to ride up Lookout Mountain since our RV would not have been able to travel the narrow, windy road. We enjoyed the journey and the view was fantastic. If you are afraid of heights this might not be the ride for you. The Incline Railway has a large parking lot which can accommodate RVs.

The Sinks Disc Golf Course

This course is on the northwest side of town, the drive alone is worth a trip as you cross over the Chickamauga Dam. Lance tackled it early one weekend morning and thoroughly enjoyed the well-signed course. The tree-shaded course was not easy but the trees are the least of your worries. The name “sinks” refers to the deep and muddy pits throughout the course that have eaten many a disc over the years.

Directions: I-75; to Hwy 153 north across the Chickamauga Dam. Take 1st exit (#7 Access Rd.), go straight through 1st traffic circle into 2nd circle and a left on N. Access Rd. Follow river 1 mile to entrance of DuPont Park/N. River Soccer Complex. Right into gravel lot. 1st tee by message board on right.

Address: Across from DuPont Park/N. River Soccer Complex.

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

This park in the Chattanooga area commemorates several battles of the Civil War that were crucial to the opening of the South to the Union Army. The park protects numerous areas where battles were fought, the two largest sections are Lookout Mountain and Chickamauga. Both have visitor’s centers and information for walking and driving tours of the park. We toured both and found that they supplemented each other nicely. The view from Lookout Mountain is worth the trip to the top. Civil War buffs will find plenty to interest them.

Chattanooga Regional History Museum

This small museum introduces the visitor to life in this section of Tennessee from the early native inhabitants up to modern times. The exhibits were interesting, although a few seemed a bit out-of-date. I had the place to myself as I explored the museum’s several floors. During my visit some of my questions about the area were answered so I left feeling it had been worth my time. Allow roughly an hour or so to tour.

Best Holiday Trav-L-Park of Chattanooga

This park was everything it said it would be, conveniently located, full of Civil War history, clean and comfortable. They have quite possibly the best shower/restroom facility we have seen yet although we found the piped in country music to be a bit over the top. Be sure to stop in the office and watch the video about the Chattanooga and Chickamauga Civil War battles. There is plenty for kids to do with a swimming pool, playground, video arcade and even a small nature trail.
