Adventures

Fort Sumter National Monument

Fort Sumter is only accessible by boat tour and there are two locations to catch the ferries; Liberty Square in Charleston and Patriot’s Point in Mt. Pleasant. We started from Liberty Square and while we waited for our ferry we explored the new and very well-designed Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center. This is a great place to begin your day at Fort Sumter because once you are on the grounds you may not have enough time to read all the signs and tour the whole fort. If a ranger talk is offered stop and listen to it, you will learn so much more than just by reading the signs. Caution: There is very little parking near Liberty Square and tours sell out quickly during high season, so plan ahead.

Charles Towne Landing

While in Charleston we had to go to the beginning and Charles Towne Landing preserves the first townsite , established in 1670 on the bank of the Ashley River. The park includes an informative museum, small zoo, reconstructed fort, beautiful Legare-Waring House and its manicured grounds. Pack a lunch as there is so much to explore. A lovely way to spend the day for although you can see Charleston across the water you don’t have the crowds.

Roosts

James Island County Park

Run by Charleston County this park offers camping, fishing, boating, biking and hiking trails, a climbing wall, bike rentals, a camp store, and cottage rentals. Not far from downtown Charleston this was the perfect home base during our visit. We wandered the many trails and enjoyed watching the birds and the sunsets. It fills up quickly so call ahead to reserve your space.
