General Nathanael Greene Homestead
Now surrounded by a subdivision, Spell Hall built by Greene in 1770, still stands tall. Greene joined the fight for Independence and earned advancement by war’s end to second in command behind General George Washington. Greene and his wife never returned to Spell Hall after the war but thankfully somebody had the forethought to protect and preserve the house. The building is in remarkable shape even some of the original floors remain. Run by a non-profit the homestead is open to the public but be sure to call in advance. This is not a museum quality experience, it is however, a very interesting way to spend a couple hours. I left wishing that the homestead was in the hands of professionals and that more people knew about it. Caution: It can be quite difficult to find as it is off the beaten path and there are few signs. You will probably be the only visitor that day.

Roosts
Colwell’s Family Campground
This place was a bit hard to find as the sign on the road was small and faded which is a good description for the park itself. The place has been around since the first RVs were introduced and its age shows. Located right on Johnson’s Pond the small park has a boat launch which is a big draw for fishermen in the area. The hook-ups are only 15 amp so we did without the a/c. We tolerated the rustic and run-down park since it was the closest park to the folks we were visiting. The owners were nice and the place could be great if they invested some time and money in the infrastructure. After all they have a monopoly in the area since there really are few choices near Warwick, RI.
