Tillamook Cheese Factory
We couldn’t drive through the small town of Tillamook and not stop in at it’s namesake cheese factory. It was easy to get to with plenty of free parking and the self-guided tour is also free. We started at the upper level where we were able to look down over the cheese-making and packaging process. There were interactive computer stations that helped to explain the process. There was a small ice cream counter up there, and we didn’t even know they made ice cream! Then we headed downstairs and joined the line for the free cheese samples, my favorite was the extra sharp cheddar. After sampling the yummy stuff we ended up in their huge cheese market/gift shop/fudge shop/ice cream counter/restaurant. Though everything looked mighty tempting we made it out of there without spending all our money…barely. Caution: It can get really crowded in there. Free admission.

Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint
What a gorgeous place, it definitely earns it’s name as it is quite scenic. From the parking lot is a short but relatively steep walkway down to the lighthouse. The lighthouse isn’t very tall but it doesn’t need to be since it is perched at the top of a 200’ cliff. At the base of the lighthouse is a small gift shop, both the gift shop and the lighthouse are open for several hours most weekend days. Check the website for details. Though the lighthouse is the highlight of the park don’t miss the short trail to the Octopus Tree, a massive Sitka Spruce. Be sure to bring your binoculars and camera, there is a Common Murre loomery on the rocks just offshore, there are numerous other birds in the area, sea lions and seals can often be seen down below, and during migration whales can be spotted. The park has a small picnic area and restrooms. Caution: The small parking lot fills up quickly on weekends. Free admission.
Address: Ten miles west of Tillamook on the Three Capes Scenic Loop.
