Eateries

Mo’s Annex

We’d heard great things about Mo’s but when we saw the line at the original restaurant we turned away. That’s when we saw the smaller Mo’s Annex. Run by the same family the Annex sits right above the water with a great view of the harbor and there was no wait. We were seated immediately. Mo’s specializes in “coast comfort food” but there are a few differences between menus at the two places, the Annex does not have a deep fryer so no fish and chips. They did have plenty of other seafood and non-seafood options for us to choose from. Of course we had to try their famous clam chowder. Unfortunately, we didn’t like it. The large pat of butter on top should have been our first clue. Overall the location was nice, casual, and relaxing, the prices were moderate, and the food was warm.

Drinkeries

Rogue Ales

When we visited during the summer of 2006 there was only one place called Rogue in Newport but now we hear there are two. We stopped in at the brewery which is on the south side of the bay. They offer daily tours but it was too late in the day for that so we just wandered upstairs to grab a few beers. The bar area had a nice view over the marina, public pier and bay. It was a special event day and things were quite crowded and hectic but we still enjoyed our beers and our visit. They try to live up to their name, so expect things to be a bit different. Caution: Do not confuse this location with their public house in downtown Newport.

Adventures

Yaquina Head Natural Outstanding Area

Run by the BLM this Area is truly outstanding. Not only does it have the tallest lighthouse in Oregon, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, but it also boasts excellent tide pools at Quarry Cove, gorgeous Cobble Beach, scenic Colony Rock, a Visitor Center with interesting exhibits, and several trails. During our visit we saw a gray whale feeding in the kelp bed just off Cobble Beach – it was magnificent! Guided tours are offered of the Lighthouse and of the tide pools. Check at the Visitor Center for times. Hint: If interested in touring the Lighthouse, head straight there to pick up a ticket, then you can explore until your tour time. Caution: Touring the Lighthouse involves steep and narrow stairs. The Lighthouse closes at 4pm. Small entrance fee.
