Crater Lake National Park

The South Entrance is the only entrance open year-round. The rim is well over 6,000’ in elevation so the snowpack can be quite high. Most years the 33-mile Rim Drive doesn’t open until mid-June. During the long winter the Park offers cross-country skiing and ranger guided snowshoe outings. The campgrounds, lodge, restaurants, store and gift shop are all closed during the winter. Things were just starting to open when we visited in late May. Only a few miles of the road were open and most of the trails were still covered in snow but the view of the lake was amazing and there were very few people there. We stopped at the Steel Visitor Center to gather more information and watch a short movie about the lake. During the summer visitors can hike, fish, swim, or take a boat tour of the lake. The Park also has over 90 miles of trails and allows back-country camping. Caution: Most of the park is at high elevation.
