Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge
The Refuge covers over 40,000 acres, most of it marsh with some forest to the east. Open during daylight hours the Refuge is very remote with viewing access along the north, south, and eastern edges of the marsh. There is a canoe launch site about 4 miles down Forest Rd 690, which would be a great way to tour the Refuge when there is enough water. We were the only people there that day, and we came across a Rocky Mountain Elk, Sandhill Cranes, Mountain Bluebirds, Cinnamon Teals, and several other species of duck. Hint: We made a loop out of the trip by driving east on Silver Lake Rd , south on Forest Rd 690 and west on Forest Rd 43 back to Hwy 97. Caution: Water fowl hunting is allowed in season. The Refuge does not have a Visitor Center so do your research beforehand and be sure to get a good map of the area. Forest Rd 690 is poorly marked, look for it on your right after you drive through the marsh, if you reach houses you’ve gone too far.
