Chalet in the Valley

Located in a building reminiscent of a Swiss Chalet this Swiss family-owned and operated restaurant serves up Swiss/Austrian dishes as well as local Amish fare. With servers in Swiss attire, the decor, and menu items like schnitzel and fondue I felt transported to another world. And yes, the fondue was delicious! Hint: Check the board for daily specials. This is one of the few restaurants in the heart of Amish country that is open on Sundays.

Adventures

Guggisberg Cheese

Don’t be fooled by the address, this cheese shop and factory is across the road from the Chalet though it is owned by the same family. This family came over from Switzerland in the 1940s, opened a cheese shop, and went on to invent the mild and creamy Baby Swiss cheese. Baby Swiss is their most popular cheese but they have other varieties available. Cheese is made almost everyday but you need to get there early in the day to watch it being made since the milk arrives fresh from nearby Amish farms in the morning. The shop has narrow walkways packed with cheese and a wide variety of goodies from the Old World and it can get quite crowded. Not sure what to kind of cheese you want? Try a sample!
