Socorro
Drinkeries
The Capitol Bar
This place reeks of history. The building that once served as the city’s jail now serves up cold beers and occasionally live music. We stopped in for happy hour and were rewarded with a tasty treat. A couple beers and a few games of pool later we felt right at home. The mostly local crowd runs the full spectrum so there’s never a dull moment.

Socorro Springs Brewing Company
While the new location doesn’t have quite the same funky ambiance and the company has branched out into coffees and a full restaurant, the beers are still high quality. If you are there in the fall try the Pumpkin beer, its delicious. Myself, I am partial to IPAs and their Pickaxe is pretty close to perfect.

Adventures
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge
Though the refuge covers 57,191 acres most of the action occurs around the wetlands. Winter is the best time to visit since the refuge is home to literally thousands of birds from sandhill cranes to geese to ducks. Keep your eyes peeled for other critters too, we saw coyotes and several deer during our visit. If you visit in the winter get there before sunrise and plan on staying to sunset when the birds fly out and in en mass. Caution: Summer will be hot, plan accordingly.

El Camino Real International Heritage Center
This wonderful museum, full of fascinating history presented in a hands-on style, is truly in the middle of nowhere. The location overlooks a remote section of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro appropriately called Jornada del Muerto, or Journey of Death. It is well worth the drive! Plan on spending at least half the day there. Caution: The Center is closed on Tuesdays and there is no food available.

Roosts
Casey’s Socorro RV Park
This small, family owned RV park is just south of town. The location makes it easy to get into town but it is a bit close to I-25 and there is a bit of road noise. The park felt a bit run down; the restrooms needed some attention and the laundry is oddly located in the office/store. It is about 30 minutes from the park to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
