Blake’s Lotaburger
This fast food joint is part of a small chain started in Albuquerque in 1952. Though the restaurant was clean and modern not much else about the place has changed in the past 50 plus years. I went for the Lotaburger and Lance opted for the chili pie and we shared an order of fries and a thick shake. I loved the green chili on my burger! While clearly not diet food everything was high quality and tasted fresh. Caution: they don’t have a large dining area, most people took their food home.

Adventures
Riverside Nature Center
Though hard to find the Nature Center is a gem! Located just off the banks of the Animas River the Center is part of the Farmington River Corridor: a series of multi-use paths, picnic areas and playing fields. Donna, who runs the Center, was very informative and enthusiastic about sharing her diverse knowledge of the area. It was a great way to get familiar with the beautiful Animas River and the flora and fauna of the area. Be sure to check their calendar as the Center offers bird walks, a farmer’s market and other events.

Museum and Visitors Center at Gateway Park
This should be your first stop in Farmington. Not only does the center have information on all the local (and nearby) attractions and activities but the museum is fantastic. Well-organized with lots of hands-on exhibits the museum focuses on the story of the area’s oil and natural gas fields. Quite an interesting story!

Bolack Wildlife Museum
To be honest, the idea of this museum did not interest me in the slightest but at the insistence of a Farmington local I signed up for a free tour. I assumed that it was just a collection of stuffed and mounted game animals from around the world. While there were a bunch of dead animals the backstory was fascinating. Mr. Bolack was not only a rancher, an oil man and a politician but also a conservationist. What I learned about the man, the museum and the ranch made me extremely glad that I took the tour.

Lion’s Den Wilderness Park Disc Golf Course
This disc golf course high in the hills above Farmington not only affords a great view of the valley below but offers a bit of a challenge. Expect your discs to get scratched up on the sandstone and be prepared for a workout as you clamber up and down to the various tees.

Mom and Pop’s RV Park
This small and quiet RV park is a bit older but for the price it can’t be beat. Just west of downtown it is close to all your basic amenities. Pop is very friendly and helpful, he is more than willing to share information about the area. Our only complaint were the bathrooms which were sorely in need of a good scrubbing.
