Ted Drewes Frozen Custard
I will admit that to one not familiar with it frozen custard does not sound all that enticing. However, we both like to try new things. So we headed over to their Chippewa location on old Route 66. The bright neon sign was easy to spot. When we first pulled up the line was part way down the block and it was a bit of a challenge to find a parking spot! But the line moved fast and soon we had our concretes in hand (custard with a flavor or topping). It was delicious! Creamy, buttery, and smooth.
Hint: Do not be discouraged by the line, it moves very quickly (and it’s worth the wait).

Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour
Since we were in its hometown we figured we might as well take the tour of this American beer icon. The tour takes you through the original Budweiser factory location including the historic Budweiser Clydesdale Stable, Beechwood Lager Cellars, Brew House, Bevo Packaging Facility and ends in the tasting room. There is a huge gift shop to occupy your time as you wait for your tour. As you might expect, this place gets mobbed, earlier in the day is probably better. Yes, you will get to see Clydesdales on the tour.
Hints: The tour is free as are the tastings (with proper ID). There is ample parking but expect to do a bit of walking.

Schlafly Brewery & Tap Room
On a whim we tried a six pack of their hefeweizen and liked it so much that we decided to check out brewery. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to take the free tour at the Bottleworks so we opted for the next best thing: trying a few brews at their downtown Taproom. The Taproom occupies a large historic building that features not only a large dining room (resos recommended) but also a casual bar area with pool tables and a jukebox. It was definitely a busy place but we enjoyed our beers, especially their hefeweizen.
Hint: They do not pasteurize any of their bottled beer so if you buy some you should keep it refrigerated.

Adventures
Jefferson Expansion National Memorial
This park-like grassy expanse in downtown St. Louis includes far more than just the famous Gateway Arch. There is also the Museum of Westward Expansion, the Old Courthouse (where Dred Scot and his wife sued for their freedom), and access to the riverfront. Hints: Access to the underground Visitor Center, museum, theaters, gift shops and Gateway Arch trams are all restricted. You must pass through security, which includes a metal detector (its a lot like airport security).
During the summer allow at least 30 minutes to pass through security. Expect long lines, during which you will be standing out in the elements (i.e. hot sun). Admission to the Museum and the Old Courthouse is free. Tram rides to the top of the Arch go fast – book in advance online or try visiting on a weekday. Plan to spend at least half a day. Caution: Parking is limited. There is a parking garage near the Arch and several pay lots nearby.

Ulysses S Grant National Historic Site
This National Historic Site preserves White Haven, the home and farm that once belonged to the Dent family. Grant not only married into this slave-holding family but he and his wife lived and worked on the family farm in the years before the Civil War. The Site is small – it includes the house, a stable and a few outbuildings but the interpretive museum covers Grant’s life in great detail and is very well done. There is also a short, introductory movie available. Not far from downtown, it is well worth a visit. Plan to spend a couple hours.
Hints: Admission is free. House is accessible by guided tour only, tours are free and run every half hour until 4pm.
