Salem Maritime National Historic Site
The Visitor Center, in a small shack near the water, offers a short film about the harbor’s importance and guided tours. We took a tour of the Custom House where Nathaniel Hawthorne once worked and we explored Friendship, a replica of a cargo vessel which is docked nearby. Stop in the West India Goods Store as they stock all manner of oddities that were once part of the vital trade network. It is hard to believe, looking at the town now that it was once one of the largest and wealthiest ports in the country. Caution: Parking is on-street, metered and limited.
