New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park

This urban park protects the remnants of what was once the largest (and richest) whaling port in the world. The port town was immortalized in Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”. Melville shipped out from New Bedford on a whaling vessel in 1841. The park includes an informative Visitor Center, the Seaman’s Bethel, a whaling merchant’s mansion, the Schooner Ernestina, and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The town is still an active fishing port though it has seen better days. The Park often offers a guided tour. Caution: It would take all day to tour all that the park has to offer. Several of these sites are not owned by the Park Service and charge their own admission fees.

New Bedford Whaling Museum

Spanning several floors this museum provides an in-depth look at the practice of whaling, products derived from whales and various species of whales. There is an emphasis on the current plight of whales as a result of the years of whaling. Be sure to catch the movie as it provides a good overview of New Bedford’s whaling years. Bonus: Though it is rather hard to find, step out onto the rooftop patio for a great view of the still-working port and her fishing vessels.
