Adventures

Maine State Sea Kayak

We signed up for a half day sea kayak tour and had a wonderful time. It was a gorgeous day, the sun was shining and the water was smooth as glass. Reservations are recommended since they limit group size to 12 people. Bring a snack and a water bottle. They provide a dry bag so you can even safely bring your camera. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet in and bring a windbreaker (or something heavier if it is cool out) for when you stop at the halfway point. It was a great way to see the coastline and wildlife; we saw bald eagles nesting, harbor seals and harbor porpoises. There was even a baby harbor porpoise!

Roosts

White Birches Campground

This family run campground is quiet, clean and fairly priced for the area. They offer showers, laundry, a swimming pool and basketball court. The sites are 30 amp with water and electric only but they have a dump station. Part of Acadia National Park wraps around the backside of the campground. The campground is located roughly two hilly miles from the town of Southwest Harbor where you can catch the free Island Explorer bus during the summer months. Southwest Harbor has all the basics with a convenience store, small market, restaurants, galleries and shops. We liked the location and the price.
