Monhegan Island

This small rugged island roughly ten miles off the coast is home to a tiny community of fishermen and artists. Much of the island is preserved as a land trust by the Monhegan Associates and is open to the public. There are over 17 miles of trails winding along the scenic coastal cliffs and beaches. We hopped on a boat tour out to the island in the morning and spent a wonderful, warm, sunny day exploring the trails. (The trail map is available online.) We stopped in at the small store and purchased a refresher after our hike. The island has limited resources so you must pack out what you pack in and be prepared for changes in the weather, etc. There are a few options for overnight stays though reservations in advance are strongly recommended. It is gorgeous out there!
