Pemaquid Point Light Station

This lighthouse was built in 1835 to guide sailors around Pemaquid Point into Muscongus Bay. It was a dangerous place, there were multiple shipwrecks through the years even while the guiding light was in operation. The lighthouse is 39’ tall and though it is now automated it still uses a fourth order Fresnel lens. Maine has several remaining lighthouses along its rugged coastline but the Pemaquid Point Light was the one chosen to grace the back of the state quarter. The lighthouse is usually open for the curious and there is a small museum relating the area’s stories. Though only 10 miles from the town of Bristol the drive will take awhile since the road narrows with each mile as it traverses the length of the small peninsula. It is very scenic! There is a small fee charged for parking.
