Mount Apatite Park
Old tourmaline quarries open to the public for collecting as part of a city park. Park along Stevens Mill Road. Follow the dirt road across the meadow to the trees where the trail starts uphill. The quarries are near the top of the hill. We found tiny schorl crystals (black tourmaline), pieces of green tourmaline, quartz, feldspar and mica. The area was first mined in the early 1900s and has been thoroughly picked over but it was still a nice hike.
Directions: From junction of Routes 4/100/202 and 11/121 in Auburn, drive west on Rte. 11/121 for 1.9 miles. Turn right onto Garfield Road and go northwest for 0.50 mile. Turn left onto Stevens Mill Road.
