Eateries

Vinnie Van GoGos Pizza

Though you might have to wait for a table this casual, reasonably priced pizza joint is the perfect place to relax. Located in the City Market District, the young and sassy Vinnie’s may take pizza seriously but nothing else. The best part of the eclectic restaurant is its shaded patio with the view of the park and tourists streaming by. It seemed to be popular with the locals who lingered over lunch sipping their beverages (Vinnie’s offers beer and wine). Quite possibly the best deal in all of historic Savannah!

Backyard Burgers

While the set-up is the same as many fast food restaurants, you order at the counter and wait, it is much nicer. The ambiance is actually enjoyable, even relaxing as you wait for your burger to be grilled. Its not all burgers either as they have a nice selection of chicken sandwiches to choose from. The food was tasty, the service friendly and the atmosphere pleasant – overall a nice fast food experience that didn’t feel like a fast food experience.

The Crab Shack

The Shack is a bit hard to find and the name is a bit of a misnomer since it is actually a sprawling maze of patios, bars, indoor dining rooms, gift shops, bird aviary and alligator swamp. We had heard such good things about it that we planned our day on Tybee Island around it and the only thing we regret is that we don’t live next door. Grab a bucket of beers, order Captain Crab’s Sampler, kick off your shoes, watch the boats come in and as the sun sets make a wish that you will make it back to the Crab Shack again.

Drinkeries

Moon River Brewing Company

Located in the former City Hotel the dining room and bar area have a historic feel. We ducked in there during a warm day of “touristing” looking for refreshment and we were well rewarded. Their beers are inventive and tasty as are some of the menu items, fried green tomatoes with crab anyone? My personal favorite in the beer department was their Swamp Fox IPA. We enjoyed our brief respite, perhaps on a longer visit we would’ve “met” the resident ghost…

Adventures

Savannah History Museum

This small but informative museum is located in the historic train station along with the Visitor Information Center, gift shop and tour operators. Stop here first to learn about Savannah’s colorful history and some of her famous offspring. Most of the tour companies are there so you can comparison shop to find the best deal for your interests. The parking lot is large and inexpensive (some days it is even free), a rarity in a small, old town like Savannah.

Oglethorpe Tours

At the Visitor Information Center we compared the different tour companies and their offers before booking with Oglethorpe Tours. The trolley picked us up right in front of the Visitor Information Center which is the most convenient place to park. Our trolley tour was fun, informative and gave us a great overview of the historic center of town. We liked that we had the option of hopping on and off the trolley. We also appreciated that the tour company donates $1 from every ticket to the Savannah fund for preservation of the city’s heritage.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Located on Cockspur Island the fort, built to protect the important port town of Savannah, was considered to be impregnable. During his U.S. Army career young Robert E. Lee was stationed there and helped in the construction of the fort. After the Civil War broke out the fort was in Confederate control until April of 1862 when Union forces attacked. The fort is in remarkably good shape and some of the mortars are still buried in the thick walls. Start with the movie then check the daily schedule and join any ranger talks or demos. Also, stop into Sutler’s Store which sells a wide range of items from the Civil War era.

Roosts

Skidaway Island State Park

We enjoyed our stay at this state park. The scenery was delightful; wood ducks with their babies on a fresh water pond, dolphins in the Intracoastal Waterway and painted buntings at the nature center. There are several trails through the park that offer insight into the history and the wildlife of the area. Plus, it is less than 30 minutes from historic, downtown Savannah.
