Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge
Wear plenty of bug spray and watch out for alligators as you tour this swamp by car, by foot or by boat. There are several points of entrance for the 402,000 plus-acre refuge but we opted for the East Entrance near Folkston, Georgia. The refuge has an informative visitor center, the Swamp Island driving tour and several hiking trails to explore. The East Entrance also offers boat tours of the swamp by a private contractor. It surprised us that the refuge offers back-country, canoe camping, since so few other refuges do. That would be a neat experience!

Okefenokee Adventures
We hopped on one of their 90 minute tours of the swamp (which really isn’t a swamp, but I’ll let them tell you about that) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the wildlife and history of the area. Take your camera as you will get really close to the alligators and birds in the refuge. The company offers several different kinds of tours to choose from. Well worth the money!
