Mesa Verde National Park

Though Mesa Verde’s primary purpose is the protection and interpretation of Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites the park also preserves acres of ruggedly beautiful canyons which host a surprising number of plant and animal species. In the park are over 4,000 sites and 600 cliff dwellings, many of which remain closed to the public in an effort to preserve and protect the fragile ruins. Don’t worry though, there are plenty of things to see and do.

First, stop at the Far View Visitor Center to find out about the ancient culture that built the dwellings. While there be sure to buy tickets (nominal fee) to at least one of the Ranger Guided Cliff Dwelling Tours. Once you know your tour time you can plan the rest of your activities. We had a mid-afternoon tour of Balcony House so before it we wandered the exhibits in the VC, stopped at several viewpoints, took a short trail and grabbed a bite to eat. Our tour of Balcony House, which took about an hour, was fun and informative. We especially enjoyed crawling through the short rock tunnel and all the ladders. Next up was a free, self-guided tour of Spruce Tree House. There is a ranger posted down there to answer any questions and protect the site. Lastly we explored the Far View Sites Complex of mesa top pueblos, pithouses, kivas and an ancient reservoir.

The park offers a lodge, campground, restaurants, cafe, gift shops, and camp store. Though we did not stay there we heard that the 400+ site campground (which includes showers, laundry, and a dump station) has 15 sites with full hook-ups. Reserve early if you want one of those since I’m sure they go fast. Caution: Most of the cliff dwelling tours involve steep climbs, stairs and tight places. Though the park is open year-round during the winter months some of the roads are closed as are the lodge, and campground so check with the park before planning a visit.
