Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Our first stop was at the Visitor Center to grab a map and other pertinent information about the Refuge. This VC has information on all five of the National Wildlife Refuges in the Klamath Basin so it is a great place to start. The VC also has a couple short trails nearby and a nice observation area. Later in the afternoon we drove the ten-mile auto-tour route through the fields and shallow ponds. We were the only car out there. We saw quite a few birds including: White-faced Ibis, Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Clark’s, Western and Eared Grebes, and Ring-necked Pheasants. Hint: Check the website for special events or to reserve a blind. Caution: Water fowl hunting is allowed in season.

Lava Beds National Monument

The Park is aptly named for its volcanic wonders but there is also a large amount of cultural history in the Park. Located in the sagebrush-covered high desert there is quite a bit to explore in the Park: over 700 lava tube caves, historic battle sites, cinder cones, several back-country hiking trails, and Native American rock art sites. The fairly new Visitor Center offers exhibits and a small gift shop. They rent lamps and sell hard hats for lava tube exploring. There is a small campground with water spigots but no hook-ups. Caution: It can get quite warm, be sure to pack plenty of water. Also, keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, we saw one during our visit.
