Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

This historic mission, which was founded 1772 as the fifth Spanish mission in California, remains a vibrant part of downtown SLO. The living quarters of the padre, built in 1793-94, now serve as a museum detailing the chaotic history of the still functioning parish church. Take a free self-guided tour of the museum, peek inside the lovingly restored church, wander the gardens or down to the small creek, or even attend mass. The mission has a small parking lot and there is also on-street parking available. Located right in the heart of downtown you can easily walk to shops or nearby restaurants after touring the mission. Caution: May be closed off and on for the rest of 2008 as the mission undergoes seismic retrofitting.
