Kono’s Cafe

Located at the Pier in Pacific Beach near Ocean Front and Garnett Avenue Kono’s serves breakfast and lunch in a supremely casual atmosphere. You’ll know you’ve found the place when you see the line of people out the door. Trust us, it is worth the wait, besides the line moves fast. Not only is breakfast delicious but its ridiculously cheap considering the large portions. We love (and miss) their potatoes! Their location right on the boardwalk overlooking the beach is good but the food is even better. You won’t need a lot but bring some cash because they don’t accept plastic.

Note: This is paper plate casual, probably not the place to take your parents, unless they can appreciate the laid back vibe.

Pokez Mexican Restaurant

Pokez fits perfectly in this slightly sketchy part of town. What you see on the outside is roughly the same as what’s on the inside, some graffiti-type art and an edgy atmosphere. We don’t go there for the ambiance or the service (which is often less-than-charming), we go there for the food. Pokez offers large portions of delicious food for really cheap prices with an emphasis on vegetarian options. We also like their oh-so-tasty home-made sangria and they have a good selection of Mexican beer. You’ll either like it or hate but if you go there with low expectations you might just be pleasantly surprised. Caution: Parking can be a challenge sometimes, either on-street metered or in pay lots.

Anthony’s Fishette, San Diego on the Bay

In our experience this is the best place to grab a reasonably priced seafood meal along the waterfront. After you order at the counter grab a seat on the patio overlooking the water. If you can hear over the crowd you’ll hear the water lapping against the pilings under your feet. We tried the fish and chips; the fish was great, white, flaky and tasty but the fries were a little soggy which was fine with me because I like them that way. Wished I had tried the clam chowder because it smelled so good! Open for lunch, dinner, and sometimes breakfast during the summer season the Fishette also serves beer. As with most of San Diego it is very casual. Hint: Sign up on their website for information about specials and coupons. Caution: The Fishette is busy so finding a seat can be hard sometimes. On-street metered parking can be hard to find. Try the metered lot across the street by the tourist information office.
