Point Reyes National Seashore

This park covers a good portion of a craggy peninsula that juts ten miles out into the Pacific Ocean. The park includes a lighthouse, a historic ranch, a Tule Elk preserve, three visitor centers, 147 miles of hiking trails (some are also open to horses and bikes) and four backcountry camping areas. It is a great place for birdwatching with black-tailed deer, whales, sea lions and harbor seals also encountered. The area is not uninhabited; basic services are available in Inverness and Point Reyes Station and there are several active dairy farms in the area. We began at the Bear Valley Visitor Center. The VC has exhibits, information about the area and several trails. We hiked the Earthquake Trail to see visible evidence of the 1906 eq. and out to a replica Coast Miwok village. Then we drove the 45 minutes out to the Lighthouse. The area is plagued with wind and fog, even though we had sunshine the wind was a nuisance. Caution: The roads are narrow and winding, watch out for animals, especially cows as they move from pasture to pasture. Be sure to check with the VC since the LH closes in bad weather. The LH is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Free admission.
