Eateries

Hill Street Cafe & Gallery

A good friend first introduced to Hill Street several years ago and we make a point of eating there every time we are in the area. The casual restaurant has seating on both floors of the restored Victorian Wetzell House and it also spills out into the garden patio. We usually grab a seat on the patio and relax. The reasonably priced menu offers a little something for everyone, especially vegetarians and vegans, with a focus on organic and healthy food. Be prepared for the service to be laid-back and a bit slow, just relax and enjoy yourself. New for us this last time was the ability to order from the Fish Joint menu across the patio. That really opens up the dining options! Another reason we like Hill Street, they have awesome beer on tap. Caution: We have not been here during the dinner hour but we hear the menu is more limited and expensive.

Fish Joint

Across the patio from Hill Street Cafe the Fish Joint has a more modern feel to it but the dedication to fresh, high quality food is the same. As the name implies this place is all about seafood. Though you can order from the Hill Street Menu too. On our visit we grabbed one of the few tables in the joint and ordered a random assortment of appetizers and sushi. Everything was fantastic, including the calamari. We tried some traditional sushi rolls and also some of the Joint’s fresh and inventive ones. The Joint’s menu is a bit more expensive than the Hill Street Cafe’s but we’re talking seafood here.

Roosts

Guajome County Park

This large park encompasses over 500 acres. There is a little something for everyone from hiking and horseback riding trails, to fishing or bird-watching at the spring-fed lakes and wetlands, to touring part of California’s early history at the ranch house. There is also a popular picnic area and gazebo. The campground has 35 sites with water and electric and a bathhouse. We picked the location because it is not far from our friends in Oceanside and, of course, the ocean is nearby. Unfortunately, we only camped there two nights so there were many parts of the park we weren’t able to explore. Caution: The summer temperatures can get quite warm and mosquitoes can be a problem because of all the water in the area. This park’s campground fills up fast so be sure to make your reservations early!
