Muir Woods National Monument

Established in 1908 to protect a small grove of old-growth coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) the Monument was named in honor of John Muir, though he was not involved in the creation of it. The Monument, which is only 12 miles from San Francisco, is a component of The Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There is a Visitor Center with exhibits and a concessionaire that sells gifts, books and snacks. The paths and boardwalks through the grove are level and handicap accessible though other sections of the six miles of trails are not. Though the Monument covers 554 acres most visitors stay in the heart of the grove near the aptly named Redwood Creek. Those wishing for some peace and quiet need only head out on one of the longer trails. Hint: This Monument is very busy, try visiting late in the day to avoid the crowds. Muir Woods Shuttle runs during the summer months, check the website for park and ride information. Caution: No picnicking, camping, smoking, bikes or pets are allowed in the Monument. The entrance roads are steep and winding. Vehicles over 35 feet long are prohibited. Parking space is very limited and fills quickly. RV parking is limited to on-street parking.
