John Muir National Historic Site
The Site has two sections, the 325 acre Mt. Wanda unit and the nine acre orchard unit. The Visitor Center, Muir House and Martinez Adobe are all located at the orchard unit. The Muir House is a 14 room, 10,000 square foot mansion that was built in 1883 by Dr. John Strentzel, John’s father-in-law. Muir lived in the mansion with his family from 1890 till he died in 1914. During those years Muir successfully managed the 2,600 acre fruit orchard, wrote many articles and books advocating conservation, co-founded the Sierra Club, promoted the creation of several National Parks and lost a valiant fight to save the Hetch Hetchy Valley. Start at the Visitor Center which has exhibits and a short film about Muir then stroll through the orchard to the Martinez Adobe. Plan your day so that you can join a guided tour of the Muir House. There are hiking trails at the Mt. Wanda unit and both allow picnicking. Hints: During the summer and fall fruit from the orchard is placed in baskets throughout the grounds for visitors to enjoy free of charge. Muir’s gravesite was acquired by the Site in 2000 though it was not open to the public at the time of our visit it may be soon, check with the Visitor Center for more information. Caution: Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
