La Jolla Cove
For most people the gorgeous cove is best enjoyed from the walkway along the top of the bluff overlooking the small sandy beach. For those who must go down to the cove there are several sets of steep stairs available. Above, Scripp’s Park offers a large grassy field, perfect for picnicking, playing games, or just relaxing. At the north end of the park are grills, tables, and a restroom/bathhouse. The cove is a popular launching area for scuba divers and snorkelers when the water is calm and visibility is good. A short stroll south of the cove is Casa Beach which is a favorite haul out area for a colony of Harbor Seals. Further south along the shore the cliffs decline in size and access to excellent tidepools is easy at low tide. Though there are lifeguards on duty most of the time, swimming and other beachy activities like sunbathing and building sand castles usually take place at La Jolla Beach, just north of the cove.
Caution: Although it is tempting all the sea life in the area is protected, even the empty shells, so don’t pick anything up. Hints: On-street parking near the cove is free but hard to find. Arrive early in the day or prepare to park far away and walk. Be sure to watch the water just offshore as Bottlenose Dolphins often swim by.
