Jack London State Historic Park
The park encompasses 800 acres which would take more than a day to explore. Upon entering the park I turned left into a large parking lot near the House of Happy Walls which is open as a small museum, gift shop, and Visitor Center. After touring the house and watching a video on Jack London I hiked the short trail to his final resting place. Not far away stood the ruins of the Wolf House, Jack and his wife Charmian’s dream house. Heading over to the other parking lot I entered the heart of London’s Beauty Ranch. I wandered through a huge eucalyptus grove that he planted, past his Pig Palace and out to his small lake. The lake has silted in over the years though it was easy to imagine how good it must have felt to swim in after a day of work in the hot sun. I looped out by the cottage and other farm buildings. Unfortunately it was too late in the day to tour the Cottage. I would suggest getting there early in the day, packing a lunch to eat at one of the picnic tables and then spending the day wandering the trails and touring the buildings. It was a great way to learn more about the dynamic man behind the books. Hint: Guided tours are sometimes available, call ahead to confirm. Caution: Most of the trails are multi-use, watch out for bicyclists and horses. Also, keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, poison oak and mountain lions.
