Drinkeries

Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens

We stopped in to take a tour of Stone’s huge new brewery. While we waited for our brewery tour to start we grabbed a beer from the bar and wandered out into the garden and relaxed. Their beer garden is large and includes a large grassy area, a pond and several huge but well-placed boulders. During the summer Stone has movie nights out on the lawn. The building is impressive, most of it is devoted to the beer making process but the rest is a multi-level indoor/outdoor dining room. The dining room has huge windows that are opened during nice weather. We enjoyed the informative tour but the best part was the free beer tasting afterwards. They also have a gift shop full of fun beer related items with attitude. Though we were hungry after the tour, we took one look at the menu (it was really expensive, their mac n cheese was over $16!) and decided to dine elsewhere. Caution: “Citracado Parkway” is a new road. So if your navigation device (or Google Maps or other searches) can’t find it, call or check the website for directions.

Adventures

San Diego Wild Animal Park

Roughly 20 miles north of San Diego the WAP, run by the non-profit Zoological Society of San Diego, houses over 3,000 animals. The park primarily focuses on African animals but species from other continents are also on display. Most, but not all, of the animals are contained in free-range enclosures that resemble their native habitats. Definitely ride the Journey Into Africa tram, it is short but informative and it drives through acres of land that you can’t see any other way. While we enjoyed the ride we felt the tram ride should be included in the price of admission. Hints: AAA members get a discount on admission. During the summer plan on staying late, as it cools off the animals will get more active. If you want to ride the Journey Into Africa tram buy it at the same time as your admission for a discount. We were told we could ride the tram multiple times during the day as long as we hung onto our tickets. They do allow you to bring in small amounts of food and water (no coolers).

Caution: WAP charges for parking so carpool if at all possible. Summer weekends are packed, try visiting during the week or other times of year. It will be extremely hot during the summer, bring sunscreen, hat and plenty of water. Prepare for a lot of walking. Be sure to check the schedule for special talks and events throughout the day.
