The Hitching Post

From Highway 101, exit Clark Avenue in Santa Maria/Orcutt. Head west on Clark. Turn right onto Highway 1. Drive approximately 3 1/2 miles. At the 4-way stop turn left onto Black Road. After 3 1/2 miles turn right at the yellow Hitching Post sign. The restaurant is a 1/4 mile down the road on your left.

Run by the Ostini family since 1952 the Hitching Post specializes in Santa Maria-style barbecue. This is the only reason most people drive to the tiny town of Casmalia. The old building is rustic, the wooden floor is uneven and creaks but the food is solid. The meals come with a veggie tray, choice of potato, shrimp cocktail, salad, and a scoop of ice cream. They have ribs, chicken and seafood entrees on the menu but steaks are what the place is really all about. It was crowded and noisy during our visit but we enjoyed our dinner. Be sure to walk over and take a peek in the window by the grill, it is quite large. Caution: Be sure to make reservations, otherwise your drive will have been for naught. Most parking is along the narrow streets.
