Carpinteria State Beach
From Hwy 101, exit at Casitas Pass Road, take Casitas Pass Road south to Carpinteria Avenue. Right onto Carpinteria Avenue. Take the first left onto Palm Avenue for three blocks. Follow signs to park entrance.
This gorgeous mile-long sandy beach on California’s central coast is also home to an extremely popular campground. The activities are endless: swimming, surffishing, poking around in tidepools, relaxing, birdwatching, looking for seals, sea lions, dolphins (we saw dolphins both times) and whales in the water, playing frisbee, kite flying, etc. The campground is well-cared for with a large grassy area for playing sports. The sites are crammed together and are difficult to get in and out of but the location is amazing. The small town of Carpinteria is close enough to walk to most of the basics, grocery store, restaurants, etc. The bathhouse was fairly clean, though the floor was always sandy, and showers are coin operated. The Visitor Center offers kids activities and has a small museum with a small tank full of tidepool creatures. There is also a large day use section with bathrooms, picnic tables and grills. Caution: Small blobs of tar wash up on the beach from off shore seeps and they will get all over you if you are not careful. This campground fills up fast so make your reservations in advance.
