Portal Store & Cafe

The store, cafe and attached Portal Peak Lodge are all run by the same family. The small cluster of red buildings is a welcome sight as there are no other services in Portal. The small store’s inventory runs the gamut from books and art by local authors to poptarts, to ice cream treats, to beer. There’s something for everyone in there. The cafe’s small front room fills up quickly though there is a back room which can accommodate larger groups. Check the chalkboard for the daily special. The food is good and the prices are reasonable considering the location. Caution: Though we have had many a meal here through the years, the cafe’s hours are rather erratic these days. In the past year we have tried to eat there on three separate occasions only to find the cafe closed. From now on we will either call ahead or eat in nearby Rodeo, NM.
