Montezuma Castle National Monument

Just a short three miles off I-17, the Sinagua people constructed a 20 room, 5 story dwelling. Tucked into a large opening in a cliff wall about 70 feet above the Beaver Creek valley floor the site was abandoned as recently as 1425 AD. The Monument includes a Visitor Center, small museum, and several cliff dwellings. The “Castle” is accessible by a short paved trail. Visitors are not allowed to enter the ruins but the trail provides an excellent view of them. The Monument also includes unattached portion called Montezuma Well which is also worth a visit. At the “Well” several small dwellings are tucked into limestone walls which surround a spring-fed pond. Nearby are segments of the Sinagua’s original water canal still in use. Both sections of the Monument have picnic areas and neither section allows camping. Caution: While the trail at the “Castle” is handicap accessible, the short, dirt path at the “Well” is not.
