July 2007 Mystery Photo Revealed

Filed under: Images & Mystery Photo by Erin on 7/22/2007

Thanks everybody for your guesses. Unfortunately, no one figured out this month’s Mystery Photo animal.

The creature in the photo was a California Sea Lion. Their Latin name, Zalophus californianus literally means “California bighead” which derives from the large bump that adult males have on their heads (I can think of some other California bigheads…).

I wish [...]

June 2007 Mystery Photo Revealed

Filed under: Mystery Photo by Erin on 6/22/2007

The photo was snapped at Balmorhea State Park in December of 2006. I was at the spring-fed pond way past sundown because all the inhabitants (fish, turtles, insects, [...]

May 2007 Mystery Photo Revealed

Filed under: Mystery Photo by Erin on 5/30/2007

This is the solution to our May Mystery Photo:

Congratulations to Aaron who correctly guessed Coyote! I don’t think the Coyote really lives up to its Latin name of Canis latrans which means “barking dog” as it rarely barks. I think it would be more appropriate to call it the “howling, yipping, amazingly resourceful dog”, however [...]

Congratulations to all those who guessed armadillo! It was indeed an armadillo, a Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) to be exact (the name is derived from the alternating bands of black and white on the armadillo’s tail).

We came across it loudly snuffling in the brush while we were hiking at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. [...]
