Ingenuity

Filed under: From the Road & Humor by Erin on 2/1/2009

While in Provo, Utah this past September we read the following blurb in the local “Coffee Times” newsletter:

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 degrees Celsius. The Russians used a pencil.

Not sure if the facts are true (though we wouldn’t be at all surprised) but found this to be humorous, regardless. Gotta love that good ol’ American ingenuity!

What is “From the Road?” It's where we share a tidbit—be it a quote, a photo, or some other oddity—that we encountered during our travels. Enjoy!
